What Our Students Are Saying

Malik Pearson, 25, born and raised in Altadena California now lives in West Covina.

At 18 he moved out and lived on his own. Soon afterward, he landed in a park, sleeping and living.

Q: What kind of obstacles have you learned to overcome?”
A: For me was being homeless, not having a job and living on my own.

Q: What are your accomplishments so far in life?
A: I was just working small part time jobs, and eventually I found this program that I like very much. Now, I have an apartment.
Things are going very well for me now.

Q: What are your goals?
A: I’d like to join the National Guard and be in the military, part time. I’d also like to open and run a non-profit organization that runs boxing clubs for at risk youth. Where I grew up, I always wanted to join a boxing gym, but they weren’t any nearby. I enjoy going to the play zone near my house in Covina. I jump on trampolines and play games I enjoy, because I didn’t get to do that as a youngster.

Malik goes on to say, “Yes, it’s true I am a hard worker. I love work. I especially love working to beautify areas in my own city. One doesn’t think often about the amount of time and money it takes to make small parks or landscapes beautiful. Now I know how much
work it takes. And I enjoy it.”
